Juno nominated classical duo will electrify audience in Spruce Grove

Denise Djokic (cello) and David Jalbert (piano) perform at Horizon Stage on November 4

One of the most captivating young artists of her generation, cellist, Denise Djokic, has thrilled audiences and critics worldwide with the passion, vigor, and sensitivity of her playing. Pianist, David Jalbert, is also a fiery young talent. With his dazzling stage presence, refined ear for music, exuberance and finesse, he, too, is an impressive performer. Touring as a part of Prairie Debut’s 2006/2007 roster of artists, Denise and David will grace Horizon Stage with their glowing warm tones and honest musical interpretations on Saturday, November 4th at 7:30 p.m.

Already the winners of two East Coast Music Awards, Denise and David’s CD Folklore was nominated for a Juno award in 2006. Released by the American label Allegro/Endeavour, the recording debuted in the number 15 slot on American Billboard Magazine’s classical chart. Denise and David have also each released solo CD’s and prior to Folklore they collaborated on a classical duet album for Sony Records.

As a recitalist and chamber musician, Denise Djokic has performed throughout North America and Europe. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, into a large musical family, Denise is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music's "Young Artist Program". She has been a recipient of several grants and prizes from the Canada Council for the Arts, was named by Maclean's magazine as one of "25 Young Canadians who are changing our World", and one of "Canada's 30 most Powerful Women" by ELLE magazine.

David Jalbert has artist diplomas from the Julliard School in New York and The Glen Gould Professional School in Toronto. He received his Masters Degree from the Université de Montréal when he was 21 and has performed in Canada, the United States, Mexico and Europe. His fluid fingers make the piano ‘sing’ and his mastery of the keyboard has garnered accolades from critics and audiences alike.

Horizon Stage is thrilled to present these two outstanding young artists. Their program will include music by Bach, Chopin, Shostakovich and Cassado. Enjoy two classical sonatas, a prelude, a suite and Bringing the Tiger Down from the Mountain II by contemporary composer Alexina Louie, Up Close and Personal at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 4. Toe-tapping, knee-slapping, foot-stomping bluegrass

Restless Lester opens for John Reischman and The Jaybirds on Saturday, October 21st

Four years of touring across North America and Europe, three critically-acclaimed albums and a Canadian Juno nomination have established John Reischman and the Jaybirds as one of the top bands in bluegrass music. With a style that is at once old and new, they combine vintage gems, original songs and trademark original instrumentals for a dynamic and refreshing sound. Performing around a single microphone, their musical talent, inspiring material and heartfelt vocals, will generate a concert on Saturday, October 21st, that is not to be missed!

As one of music world’s top-ranked mandolin players and composers, veteran artist John Reischman is renowned for his exquisite taste, tone and impeccable musicianship. The rest of the Jaybirds are veterans as well and include Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals, Nick Hornbuckle on 5-string banjo and Greg Spatz on fiddle. Based out of Vancouver, BC the band are regulars at bluegrass and folk festivals across North America. They were last seen here at the Edmonton Folk Fest in 2004 and at Horizon Stage in 2003.

Opening this spectacular evening of bluegrass will be Edmonton-based favourites, Restless Lester. Bass player Keith Burgess of Jerusalem Ridge, Bruce Blair (fiddle), Steve Fischer (guitar) and Brad Lindberg (banjo) travel the musical gamut from the Stanley Brothers to Elvis to Bob Wills to Louden Wainwright III. Formed in 2002, Restless Lester just released their first CD, Endless Skies.

Horizon Stage is excited to present what is sure to be a rip-roaring evening of down-home bluegrass fun! See John Reischman and The Jaybirds with Restless Lester at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 21. Tickets are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students and seniors. Call the Horizon Stage Box Office at 962-8995 for more information or to purchase your tickets today!

“Though Reischman is the leader and front man, he gives (everyone) plenty of room to shine, and together they produce music that is seamlessly excellent and rewarding. ”

Explore a family’s dreams and desires through theatrical dance.

Sursaut Dance Company presents Family Portrait at Horizon Stage on October 21

How would the hopes and dreams of your family look if you expressed them through dancing? Take a glimpse inside an apparently ordinary family’s imaginations and memories with the dance-theatre production Family Portrait Up Close and Personal at Horizon Stage in Spruce Grove on Saturday, October 21.

Family Portrait presents a picture of an average family; but behind appearances are their dreams, thoughts, desires and memories. Performed by Sursaut Dance Company from Sherbrooke, Quebec, Family Portrait is a dance-theatre production in which poetry and humour go hand in hand and where realism and fantasy overlap. Images of great beauty, spellbinding choreographies and unusual and engaging characters make it a magical show that will amaze children and adults alike.

Founded in 1985, Sursaut is a contemporary dance company devoted to the creation and production of shows for young and family audiences. Artistic director and choreographer, Francine Châteauvert, collaborates closely with dancer and general manager, Adam Dymburt, forming the heart of the company. Their pieces have been presented from coast to coast in Canada and outside the country. Last seen in Spruce Grove in 2002 when they performed the charming Les Excentriques, Sursaut's joyful and touching creations thrill spectators young and old alike, everywhere they go.

The second presentation in Horizon Stage’s 2006/2007 Family Matinee Series, Family Portrait is whimsical and fun. Let your children experience the wonder and beauty in the art of dance at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 21. Free pre-show activities start in the theatre lobby at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are just $10.00 for all ages. Call the Horizon Stage Box Office at 962-8995 for more information or to purchase your tickets today!
